The Precessing Top

چکیده

When a symmetric top is set spinning with angular velocity ω c about its own axis, it traces out a circle about a vertical direction with angular velocity ω z , as shown in Fig. 1. In most textbooks [1, 2, 3] the precessional angular velocity ω z is calculated under the assumption that it is much smaller than the spin angular velocity ω c . This makes for a simplification of the calculation by considering the total angular momentum as due to the spin motion only, and thus directed along the symmetry axis. In this case, the angular momentum along the symmetry axis is L = Iω c , where I is the moment of inertia about this same axis. The tip of this vector describes a circle of radius L sin θ around the vertical direction. The torque of gravity is mgl sin θ, where m is the mass of the top and l is the distance of its center of mass C to O. In a time interval ∆t the torque changes the angular momentum by Lsin θω z ∆t in a direction tangent to the circle. Equating torque to time change in angular momentum yields the usual formula ω z = mgl/Iω c for slow precession [2]. In this note I drop the simplifying assumption that the total angular momentum is solely along the symmetry axis in order to obtain the following general expression for ω z ,

Bubbles in Planetary Nebulae and Clusters of Galaxies: Slowly Precessing Jets

I derive the condition for narrow jets with varying axis, e.g., precessing jets, to inflate more or less spherical (fat) bubbles in planetary nebulae and clusters of galaxies. This work follows a previous work dealing with wide jets, i.e., having a wide opening angle. The expressions derive here are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to the conditions for inflating fat bubbles by non-prec...

Precessing Jets and Molecular Outflows: A 3-D Numerical Study

– 2 – We present 3-D numerical hydrodynamical simulations of precessing supersonic heavy jets to explore their evolution, how they differ from straight jets and how well they serve as a model for generating molecular outflows from Young Stellar Objects. The dynamics are studied with a number of high resolution simulations on a Cartesian grid (128x128x128 zones) using a high order finite differe...

Is 3 C 287 a precessing radio source ?

We present a 5 GHz VLBI image of the compact steep spectrum (CSS) quasar 3C287. The source has been one of the candidate precessing CSS sources. Both static features and large structural changes are observed since the earliest VLBI experiments. The overall picture does not seem to support a precessing jet scenario.

Stagnation Knots in Precessing Jets

The problem of the formation of a stagnation knot in the head of a precessing stellar jet is investigated from both an analytical and numerical point of view. This dense structure is formed via a similar method to that proposed by Steffen (these proceedings) for the formation of FLIERS in planetary nebulae. Initial results suggest that the formation of a stagnation knot is possibly an intrinsic...
